The question

Is the rule for the worshiper saying "Alhamdulillah" (praising Allah) for the Hanbalis the same as that for saying "Sami' Allahu liman Hamidah" (Allah hears him who praises Him) and the transition Takbeers (saying "Allahu Akbar") in terms of sufficiency, and is the sufficient wording for "Alhamdulillah" only "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd" (Our Lord, and to You be all praise) without any dispute?

The answer

Scholars have differed on whether it is legislated for the congregant to say "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears whoever praises Him). The we adopt is that the congregant suffices with the tahmid (praise), which is a according to the majority of scholars. However, according to the Hanbalis, it is obligatory, and its place for the congregant is during his rising (from rukoo').

There are four sufficient forms of tahmid: "Rabbana wa laka al-hamd" (Our Lord, and to You be all praise), "Rabbana laka al-hamd" (Our Lord, to You be all praise), "Allahumma Rabbana laka al-hamd" (O Allah, our Lord, to You be all praise), and "Allahumma Rabbana wa laka al-hamd" (O Allah, our Lord, and to You be all praise). All of them are sufficient, and it is better to alternate between them.

The first (form of tahmid) is an addition to the obligatory amount, as stated in the Sunnah, such as saying: "Mil'a as-samawati wa mil'a al-ardi wa mil'a ma shi'ta min shay'in ba'd" (filling the heavens, filling the earth, and filling whatever else You wish). This applies to the Imam and the person praying alone, and also to the congregant according to the more sound opinion.
