The question

Must a woman who miscarried a fetus in her third month, and thought the blood was nifas (postpartum bleeding) so she stopped praying for a week to ten days, make up the missed prayers? And if she must make them up, should she do so consecutively or each prayer with its corresponding one?

The answer

If a woman miscarries, the blood is not considered postpartum bleeding () unless the human form is discernible, which does not occur before eighty-one days of pregnancy. If the miscarriage occurs before this period, the blood discharged is considered irregular bleeding (istihada) and does not prevent prayer or fasting. However, if the miscarriage occurs after eighty days, then if the formation is apparent (such as a head and limbs), it is nifas. If it is not apparent, then it is not nifas.

If a woman abandons prayer, thinking the blood is nifas when it is not, some scholars state she is not required to make up the prayers. However, making up the prayers is more cautious. When making them up, she should pray them consecutively, as she is able, arranging the five daily prayers for each day.
