The answer

The issue of a person performing an obligatory prayer (al-muftarid) following someone performing a supererogatory prayer (al-mutanaffil) is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The opinion that affirms its validity is more preponderant. If the one performing the obligatory prayer and the one performing the supererogatory prayer are equal in the qualities of an Imam, or if the one performing the obligatory prayer has more qualities, then the one performing the obligatory prayer has more right to lead the prayer (Imamate). However, if the one performing the obligatory prayer has fewer qualities, there is no harm in him praying as a follower.
