The Prophet's saying: "If you say to your companion on Friday, 'Listen,' while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have engaged in idle talk," was narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others. Reading this hadith (definition) before the Friday prayer to alert worshippers to the obligation of listening during the sermon is a form of enjoining good. However, it should not be done regularly before every sermon, as it was not authentically transmitted that way, and so that people do not become weary and its effect diminishes. Speaking before the Friday sermon is permissible, because listening is only required during the sermon itself.
