Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) is obligatory for every Muslim male who is sane, has reached puberty, and is a resident or permanent dweller. The precise distance at which Jumu'ah becomes obligatory is a matter of scholarly disagreement. Some scholars have set it at three miles, citing the of the blind man as evidence. It appears that whoever lives a distance of more than half an hour by car from the nearest mosque is not obligated to attend Jumu'ah, especially if attending it would cause harm. However, if there is no harm, then participating with the Muslim community is better and carries greater reward.
