Is it obligatory to make up missed prayers, or is sincerity in obedience sufficient?

Scholars have differed regarding making up prayers intentionally missed. The majority of jurists, such as the Hanafis, Malikis, and Shafi‘is, are of the view that making them up is obligatory. However, the Hanbalis and some scholars hold that what is obligatory is repentance and remorse. The reason for this difference of opinion goes back to the Hanbalis considering the one who abandons prayer to be a disbeliever, based on multiple hadiths to that effect.
