What is the interpretation of the Almighty’s saying: (But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what has become a dispute between them)? And what is it that the Messenger, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, must be made a judge in?

The noble verses in Surat An-Nisa (65) and Surat Al-Ma'idah (50, 44, 45, 47) indicate the obligation to rule by Allah's law in every small and large matter, and the impermissibility of deviating from it. Muslims must be completely content with Allah's judgment and law. Whoever claims the permissibility of ruling by other than what Allah has revealed, or believes that man-made laws are equal to or superior to it, has apostatized from Islam. As for whoever believes in the obligation to rule by the Sharia (definition) but rules by other than it due to whim or bribery, he is committing a lesser disbelief (kufr), injustice (dhulm), and wickedness (fisq), and does not thereby exit the fold of Islam.
