The question

What is the prayer referred to in Aisha's — may Allah be pleased with her — saying: "By Him Who took him, he did not leave them until he met Allah, and he did not meet Allah Almighty until he became too heavy for prayer, and he used to perform much of his prayer while sitting"? And does it refer to the two Rak'ahs of Sunnah after Asr? And is the Hadith authentic?

The answer

The majority of scholars dislike praying after Asr until sunset and after Fajr until the sun rises, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: “(There is) no prayer after Fajr until the sun rises, and no prayer after Asr until the sun sets.” What the Prophet (peace be upon him) did, praying two rak'ahs after Asr, was due to missing the two rak'ahs of Dhuhr; so he made them up after Asr. Then he continued to perform them, because if he prayed a prayer, he would establish it. This was one of his (peace be upon him) unique characteristics. It is permissible to make up missed regular supererogatory prayers after Asr, as well as prayers with a specific reason, such as Tahiyyat al-Masjid (prayer for greeting the mosque).
