What is the ruling on past prayers that were not performed with their regular supererogatory (Sunnah Ratibah) prayers? And should the supererogatory prayers of missed (fawāʾit) obligatory prayers be made up when making up those obligatory prayers, or is it permissible to compensate for them with seeking forgiveness (istighfār)? And is it permissible to perform the supererogatory prayers of obligatory prayers after their time has expired?

Whoever misses the regular prayers is not obligated to make them up, though it is good if he does. However, whoever misses obligatory prayers is obligated to make them up. The making up of missed obligatory prayers takes precedence over performing Sunnah prayers and supererogatory prayers, and even over the current regular Sunnah prayers. As for a regular Sunnah prayer that is missed, it is permissible to make it up.
