The question

Is gathering in the mosque every Friday after Maghrib prayer to learn how to read, recite, or study the Quran considered an innovation (bid‘ah), given the establishment of a specific day and time for this gathering, especially with the existence of fatwas like those of Ibn Taymiyyah, while some shaykhs fix the times of their religious lessons in mosques?

The answer

Choosing a specific day of the week to recite the Quran, attend a religious lesson, or participate in a session for studying good deeds, based on the availability of their time, is not a reprehensible innovation (bid'ah); rather, it is an act of nearness to Allah (qurbah) and obedience. However, if they add to this the belief that this particular day has a special virtue and merit over other days, and that performing acts of worship on it is superior, then this is a reprehensible innovation. This is because they are claiming guidance to a good deed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not guide to, and such an act is rejected according to his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever introduces into this matter of ours anything that does not belong to it, it will be rejected."
