The question

Is it permissible for a Muslim to switch between madhhabs (schools of thought) regarding prayer times, such that he performs the Fajr prayer according to the Hanafi madhhab's timing, and then performs the remaining prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha) according to the timings of other madhhabs, such as the Shafi'i and Maliki, knowing that there is a difference in the times of some prayers, especially Asr, between the Hanafi madhhab and the other madhhabs?

The answer

Congregational prayer in the mosque is obligatory for resident men if they hear the call [to prayer]. There is no harm in praying behind followers of the four schools of thought, such as the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, or Hanbali; because differences in subsidiary matters do not cause harm. The time for the Asr prayer begins, according to the majority of jurists and Abu Yusuf and Muhammad, the two companions of Abu Hanifa, when the shadow of a thing becomes equal to its length, which is the end of the Dhuhr prayer time. However, Abu Hanifa held that it begins when the shadow of a thing becomes twice its length, and this is the reason for the Hanafis' delay in praying Asr. There is no harm in praying behind Hanafis despite their delaying Asr, because this delay does not take the prayer outside its time. However, if there is a mosque that prays Asr according to the opinion of the majority, then following the and praying there is more preferable.
