Is it permissible to listen to the Adhan outside the times of the obligatory prayers?

There is no harm in listening to the Adhan (definition) at any time outside of prayer times, whether from programs, a mobile phone, or a tape recording, due to the remembrance of Allah and the sublime meanings it contains. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar explained that the Adhan includes matters of creed such as the existence of Allah and His perfection, monotheism, the affirmation of prophethood, and the call to obedience and success. Nevertheless, it is not prescribed to respond when hearing the Adhan through these means, because it is not a real Adhan being called at its designated time, as Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen clarified.
