To what extent is it valid to say that trousers for men are forbidden based on the Hadith: "Wear trousers (sarawil), and wear an izar, and be different from the People of the Book, for they wear trousers but do not wear an izar," and that the izar intended in the Hadith is the dishdasha or qamis?

It is permissible to wear trousers, and it is not considered imitation of disbelievers, because it is not clothing exclusive to them. The hadith (definition) narrated by Ahmad from Abu Umamah, which states: "Wear trousers (sarawil) and wear izars, and differ from the People of the Book," does not mean prohibiting wearing only trousers. Rather, the intent is not to restrict oneself to them and avoid the izar, as the People of the Book do. Instead, trousers should be worn sometimes, and izars at other times. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted wearing trousers alone for someone in a state of ihram (definition) if he could not find an izar. It has been reported that the Companions and Tabi'in wore trousers alone, and Umar permitted prayer in trousers and a cloak. The jurists have unanimously agreed on the permissibility of wearing them, and that they provide more concealment, even though the izar was the garment of the people. Wearing trousers alone is no longer exclusive to the People of the Book now; rather, many Muslims do so, thereby negating the resemblance.
