What is the ruling on the prayer of someone who experiences epileptic seizures during which they lose consciousness and memory for a few seconds, and must they repeat the prayer or complete it?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
If consciousness is lost, even for a few seconds, ablution is invalidated and prayer becomes void, requiring their re-performance. Jurists are in unanimous agreement that ablution is nullified by fainting, insanity, intoxication, and medications that impair the mind, whether their effect is slight or extensive. Therefore, if the state of unconsciousness prevents one from feeling anything that might exit the body, ablution is invalidated.
