Is it permissible to raise one's hands during supplication (Du'a), and what is the benefit of that?

The fundamental principle is the permissibility of raising hands in supplication (Du'a), except in instances where it has been authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made supplication without raising his hands. Examples of these instances include supplication during prostration (Sujud (definition)) and after the final Tashahhud (definition). Raising hands in supplication has many rulings and insights that scholars have striven to deduce. It has been said: because the heavens are the Qibla (definition) of supplication and the place where revelation descends. Ibn Taymiyyah considered it among the proofs of Allah's exaltedness. Some of the early Muslims (Salaf) said: Raising the hands is a sign of humility and earnest entreaty. Sheikh Atiyyah Saqr said: Extending the hands resembles a poor person asking for charity from a rich person, and it is an indication of the supplicant's humility and intense need.
