The question

Is it permissible for a person suffering from chronic flatulence (sals al-reeh) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to combine prayers? Is it permissible to perform the Dhuhr prayer in congregation and then the Asr prayer individually? Is it permissible to combine Maghrib and Isha prayers with an early combination (jam' taqdeem) before the Isha adhan in order to perform Qiyam al-Layl immediately thereafter?

The answer

The Hanbalis permit combining two prayers for those with a continuous condition, such as incontinence or involuntary flatulence, while the majority of scholars do not. The more cautious approach is to act according to the opinion of the majority. According to the Hanbalis, combination is permissible, whether by performing the later prayer earlier (jama‘ taqdim) or the earlier prayer later (jama‘ ta’khir). It is also permissible to pray one of the combined prayers in congregation and the other individually. Furthermore, it is permissible to perform the night prayer ( al-layl) and Witr after the 'Isha prayer, even if it is before its prescribed time, as the time for Witr begins from the 'Isha prayer, even if it is combined with the Maghrib prayer by way of jama‘ taqdim, and extends until the dawn breaks.
