Is it permissible for a husband to have intercourse with his wife knowing that water will not be available for ghusl after intercourse?

It is permissible for a man to have intercourse with his wife even if he knows that water for ghusl (definition) (ritual bath) is unavailable. In such a case, he should wash his private parts, perform tayammum (definition) (dry ablution), and pray. However, if he does not wash his private parts, he would be required to repeat the prayer if it is held that the moisture from the woman's private parts is impure; otherwise, not. This is the view of Ash-Shafi'i, Ibn Abbas, Jabir bin Zayd, Al-Hasan (definition) Al-Basri, Qatadah, Ath-Thawri, Al-Awza'i, the jurists of opinion (Ahl Ar-Ra'y), Ahmad, and Ishaq. Ibn Al-Mundhir also preferred this view. The permissibility is based on the argument that intercourse is permissible and should not be prohibited unless there is evidence to the contrary. Indeed, Ibn Abbas did this and prayed with his companions, and they did not object to him.
