Is it permissible to trim the beard and to take from its length and sides, considering that the Messenger did not forbid that, and that the default ruling for things is permissibility?

Shaving the beard is forbidden. As for shortening it when it exceeds a fistful, it is permissible according to most jurists, and this has been narrated from a group of the Salaf.
