The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded to grow the beard, let it be full, and let it hang down. The implication of these commands is that it should not be trimmed or reduced in any way, except for what exceeds a fistful, which most jurists permit trimming. This has been narrated from a number of companions and their successors. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had a dense beard, meaning it was thick and rounded, not long, and this is the most perfect state.
