Sound evidence indicates the obligation to let the beard grow long and full, and the prohibition of shaving it or shortening it. This is based on the authentic and explicit prophetic traditions (hadiths) and narrations concerning it, and on the general texts that forbid imitating disbelievers. Ibn Hazm narrated a consensus that shortening the mustache and letting the beard grow is obligatory. The beard is the hair of the cheeks and the chin.
