Does dry cleaning render clothes pure?
The madhhab of the majority of jurists is that it is not permissible to remove impurity except with absolute water, based on the saying of Allah the Almighty: "And We sent down from the sky pure water" [Al-Furqan: 48], and His saying: "And He sends down upon you from the sky water to purify you thereby" [Al-Anfal: 11]. Abu Hanifa, Abu Yusuf, and Ahmad, in one narration, held the view that it is permissible to purify impurities with water and with any pure liquid that can remove them, such as vinegar and rosewater. They based their argument on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) hadith: "When one of you comes to the mosque, let him look. If he sees dirt or harm on his sandals, let him wipe it off and pray in them." The preponderant view is the second one, due to the strength of its evidence and its conformity with the rules of Sharia. However, the more cautious approach is the first view, to avoid dispute.
