The question

Is any bathing sufficient for ritual bathing (ghusl) from major ritual impurity (janabah), or is it necessary to specify the intention for it? And must the intention be uttered before purifying oneself (istinja'), or is merely sprinkling water on the organ sufficient?

The answer

from (ritual impurity due to sexual defilement) is an act of worship. The intention () is a condition for its validity according to the majority of scholars. This intention must be to remove the ritual impurity (raf‘ al-) or to make prayer permissible (istibahat al-salat). Whoever performs ghusl for cleanliness or cooling off, without the intention of removing janabah, their ritual impurity is not removed.

Uttering the intention verbally is not legislated in acts of worship, and intention is not a condition for ’ (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself).
