Is it permissible to use fertilizer extracted from dried blood via hydrolysis in tomato cultivation?
The fertilizer in question is divided into two types: dried blood (blood meal), which is a dried powder made from animal blood, and CHASE ORGANIC TOMATO FEED, which is a special tomato fertilizer containing amino acids extracted from dried blood through hydrolysis. Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on watering plants with impure substances or fertilizing the land with them. The majority of jurists (Hanafis, Malikis, and Shafi'is) have held that it is permissible, and that the fruit is pure and lawful. In contrast, the Hanbalis have ruled that plants watered with impure substances are forbidden, and that their fruit is impure. This website chooses the opinion of the majority, which permits fertilizing plants with impure or contaminated substances that are beneficial to the land and plants. Based on this, there is no harm in using dried blood or fertilizers that contain acids extracted from it, provided that health instructions are followed.
