It is recommended to wash one's hand with water before commencing istinja (definition)' (ablution after defecation or urination) to avoid the smell of impurities clinging to it. Al-Kharshi mentioned that this is desirable to facilitate the removal of any smell clinging to the hand if it comes into contact with impurities while dry. It is preferable to first wipe the area of impurity with a stone or tissue, then wash it with water.
