The question

Is what the questioner used to do in istinshaq—pushing water into the nose without drawing it in with the breath—considered sufficient, by analogy with the opinion of those who permitted wetting two fingers and inserting them into the nose? And is it permissible for her to adopt the opinion that istinshaq is not a condition for the validity of wudu’ or ghusl, if her action was not correct? And is she considered mistaken in her understanding or interpretation, or deliberately following her whims, due to her fear of being harmed by drawing in water?

The answer

Some scholars consider istنشاق (sniffing water into the nose) obligatory in wudu (ablution). It involves drawing water into the nose with a breath, and it suffices to draw water into the nostrils. Simply placing water in the nose without drawing it in is not enough. Some scholars believe that if someone does not perform istنشاق but pushes the water with their hand until it reaches their nostrils, it is sufficient, especially if there is a valid excuse. If there is no drawing in of water with a breath, some scholars have made it easier, believing that what has passed is acceptable, but it should be observed in the future whenever possible and without harm. Istنشاق should be performed by drawing water in with a breath, along with exaggeration, except when fasting.
