The question

Is it permissible to interpret the noble verse, "And the good land—its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord; but as for that which is bad, nothing emerges except sparsely" (Al-A'raf 7:58), in this manner to suit a specific situation that is not mentioned in the Qur'an?

The answer

Delving into the Book of Allah without knowledge is a serious matter. The student erred in his reliance on Quranic verses to prove that the professor's baldness is mentioned therein, even if his intention was good, as he did not base his argument on شرعي (Islamic legal) knowledge.

The student cited two verses: 1. {And all things We have enumerated in a clear register.} (Ya-Sin: 12): This verse refers to Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet), not the Holy Quran. The appropriate verse for the Quran's comprehensiveness of everything is Allah's saying: {And We have sent down to you the Book as a clarification for all things.} (An-Nahl: 89). This verse does not mean that the Quran mentions every detail, such as the baldness of a specific person, but rather that it clarifies everything people need in their religion and worldly affairs. 2. {As for the good land, its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord, but that which is bad produces nothing except with difficulty.} (Al-A'raf: 58): This deduction is a clear mistake. The verse provides a parable for the believer and the disbeliever. The good land produces good vegetation by its Lord's permission, like the believer who benefits from guidance and knowledge. And the bad land produces nothing but meager or useless vegetation, like the disbeliever who does not benefit from guidance. This does not mean that baldness is proof of bad disposition, for Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, was bald.
