The answer

Ibn Kathir, in his , mentioned two interpretations for the meaning of the verse (فما فوقها - "what is above it"): The first: meaning what is smaller than it in insignificance and worthlessness. This is the view of Al-Kisa'i and Ibn Ubayd. The second: meaning what is greater than it. This is the view of Qatadah ibn Di'amah, and it is the preferred view of Ibn Jarir, and it is supported by the : "No Muslim is pricked by a thorn or anything greater than it except that Allah records a degree for him thereby and expiates a sin from him thereby." And Allah knows best.
