The question

What is the interpretation of the two apodoses in the story of Prophet Jonah in Surat As-Saffat and Al-Qalam, and was the consequence that would have occurred had it not been for Allah's intervention his remaining in the belly of the whale or his being cast forth censured?

The answer

There is no contradiction in the Qur'an. Resolving the apparent contradiction between the verses of Surat Al-Qalam (68:48-49) and Surat As-Saffat (37:143-144) can be understood in several ways:

1. In the first verse (Al-Qalam), the answer to "lula" (if not) might be omitted, which would be "he would have remained choked," i.e., in the belly of the whale. This aligns with the meaning of the verse in Surat As-Saffat. Thus, the phrase "he would have been cast forth on the naked shore while he was condemned" would be an explanatory continuation.

2. The meaning is: If it were not for Yunus's glorification (tasbeeh), he would have remained in the belly of the whale, but through his glorification, he was cast forth onto the naked shore. "And had he not been of those who glorify [Allah], He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected" (As-Saffat: 143-144). And since he was cast forth due to his glorification, had it not been for the grace of his Lord, he would have been cast forth onto the naked shore while condemned. However, Allah's grace was abundant, so he was not condemned.

3. In summary: Allah's mercy overtook Yunus (peace be upon him) because he was among those who glorified (Allah). Otherwise, he would have remained in the whale's belly until the Day of Resurrection, and he would have been cast forth on that day "while he was condemned." Then he was cast forth onto the naked shore after Allah's mercy overtook him, and Allah negated condemnation from him when he was cast forth, thus saving him from the whale's belly and from being cast forth while condemned.
