What was the occasion for the revelation of the noble verse in Surat Al-Ma'idah: "O Messenger, convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord," and does it indicate Ali ibn Abi Talib's greater right to the caliphate after the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
This verse from Surat Al-Ma'idah has differing opinions regarding its revelation. It was said that it was revealed to encourage the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to convey the message fully without fear of people's disbelief, or in response to the Jews, or in specific stories. The most probable interpretation is its generality, meaning the obligation to convey everything that was revealed to him from his Lord, and not to conceal anything. This includes all rulings and legislations that were revealed, and is not specific to a particular matter. It has been established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not conceal anything from the revelation. As for the claim that the verse refers to the caliphate of Ali, it is an unfounded assertion, for the verse signifies the generality of conveying the message, not the guardianship of a specific person.
