The question

What is the correct spelling of the word "يرجو" in the noble verse "فمن كان يرجوا لقاء ربه فليعمل عملا صالحا" (So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work): with an alif after the waw, as it is in the Mushaf, or without it, and should one object to whoever writes it in either of the two ways?

The answer

The fundamental principle in writing the Qur'an is the obligation to write the alif after the waw in "yarjū" in His Almighty's saying: (فَمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوا لِقَاءَ رَبِّهِ) [Qur'an 18:110], and we know of no disagreement regarding this.

The Uthmani script has been observed in writing the Qur'anic manuscripts, where the alif is written after the waw in the word "yarjū". However, if the word is found without an alif, this might be in a verse quoted in a book or an article, where adherence to the rules of the Uthmani script is not obligatory, although following the Uthmani script is preferable.

Adhering to the Uthmani script is obligatory when writing Qur'anic manuscripts. As for writing Qur'anic verses outside of the manuscripts (such as quoting them in a book), it is more prudent to adhere to it to avoid disagreement, but it is not obligatory.

If you see someone writing "yarjū" without an alif in a Qur'anic manuscript, you must advise and alert them, because altering the script of the Qur'an written by the Companions is forbidden. However, outside of a Qur'anic manuscript, there is no need to alert them.
