The question

What is the interpretation of the narration which stated that Umar ibn al-Khattab recited: "And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and those who followed them with good conduct," while another person recited it as: "And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct," and that Umar said: "I bear witness that Allah revealed it thus"?

The answer

The report narrated by Ibn Shabbah about Umar's recitation of the verse: (And the first to embrace Islam of the Muhajireen and those who followed them with good conduct) and his dispute with Ubayy - is weak due to the anonymity of the narrators and the قطع (discontinuity) in the chain of transmission.

This report contradicts more authentic narrations, which state that the dispute was concerning the grammatical case of the word "al-Ansar" and not its omission. Umar recited it in the nominative case (وَالْأَنْصَارُ - and the Ansar), while Ubayy recited it in the genitive case (وَالْأَنْصَارِ - and the Ansar).

The two recitations have different meanings: - The recitation in the nominative case means that the foremost (predecessors) are only from the Muhajireen, and that the Ansar are conjoined with the predecessors. - The recitation in the genitive case (which is the recitation of the majority) means that the predecessors include both the Muhajireen and the Ansar.

Ubayy's statement to Umar, "And Al-Khattab and his son were not consulted in it," expresses that the Quran was revealed from Allah the Almighty, and not through anyone's consultation.
