What is the ruling on actions and words that may appear to be mockery of religion or apostasy, such as committing sins in the presence of Quranic verses, or placing books on top of the Mushaf, or smiling upon hearing the phrase "by your mother's religion," or performing prayer movements without purity, or ridiculing the description of some as martyrs, or supporting the criticism of those who are outwardly religious?

What the questioner mentioned does not go beyond the realm of waswasa (whispers/obsessive thoughts), which should be ignored. We have previously addressed waswasa concerning issues of mocking the religion. There are also fatwas regarding laughing and smiling in situations where the person is accused of mocking the religion. We advise the questioner of the necessity to differentiate between a forbidden sin and mocking the religion. Masturbation and praying without purification are forbidden acts, but it is not necessarily the case that the one who commits them is mocking the religion.
