Is it permissible to accept symbolic gifts offered to you during work, and what is the ruling on using them personally, giving them to colleagues, or donating them?
It is not permissible to accept gifts offered because of one's job, as they are a means to sway the employee and favor the giver. If the giver has not received something he does not deserve because of the gift, then it must be returned to him. However, if returning it is impossible, or if the giver has received something he does not deserve, then one must dispose of it by giving it to the poor and needy, or by selling it and spending its value on them or on other charitable causes. It is permissible to give it to a poor colleague. As for money acquired unlawfully, it is not obligatory to return it to the giver if its compensation has been fulfilled; rather, it should be disposed of by giving it in charity.
