The answer

It is not permissible to take a fee for bearing witness (giving testimony) because it is an act of worship that must be performed for Allah Almighty to establish the truth and remove injustice, in fulfillment of His saying: (witnesses for Allah) and (establish testimony for Allah). As for someone who handles litigation as an agent or representative, such as a lawyer, it is permissible for them to take money for their effort and services, unlike a witness. Likewise, it is not permissible for a judge to take money for their ruling; otherwise, it would be considered a forbidden bribe.
