Conversation between a young man and a foreign woman, whether online or otherwise, is impermissible except out of necessity, because it is a gateway to temptation. The continuation of such conversation is not justified by the family's knowledge or by the conversation being polite and general, as all of that is a gradual enticement from Satan. A person's claim that they are safe from temptation is incorrect, for conversation between two non-mahram (definition) individuals without necessity is a cause for suspicion of temptation.
