How is the zakat calculated for a monthly income of 1500 Saudi Riyals, which a university student receives from renting out a villa he owns? Is the completion of a hawl (one lunar year) a condition for its disbursement?

The hawl (completion of a year) is a condition for the obligation of zakat (definition), meaning the passage of a full Hijri year on the ownership of the nisab (definition) (minimum taxable amount). To pay zakat, the owner has two options:

1. To make the hawl of the nisab the hawl for all wealth, so all of it is zakatable on the day the nisab completes its hawl. 2. To make the nisab have its own independent hawl, and for every new acquisition of wealth thereafter to have its own separate hawl, so its zakat is paid when its hawl is completed.
