What indicates that lineage is not a criterion for competence is the hadith: "If someone comes to you whose دين (religious commitment) and خلق (character) you are pleased with, then marry him [to your daughter], for if you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." Furthermore, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf married his sister to Bilal, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married Fatimah bint Qays to Usamah ibn Zayd.
