The question

Does the inclusion of the meaning of a sound mursal hadith – one whose chain of narration is not sound due to its mursal nature (i.e., a Successor narrates directly from the Prophet without mentioning the Companion from whom he heard it) and lack of follow-up narrations – from one of the Companions without contradiction, and the fact that some of the Tabi'in (Successors) and most of the people of knowledge acted upon it, strengthen this mursal hadith and make it valid for practice and argumentation?

The answer

Among the Imams, some accept Mursal (reported by a successor from the Prophet directly) narrations absolutely, such as the Hanafis and Malikis. Imam Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, accepts the Mursal of the senior Tabi'een (successors) if it is supported by another chain, or if it is reported by someone who took knowledge from different narrators than the first, or if it agrees with the saying of a Companion, or if the majority of scholars issued a based on its implication.
