The question

Is this narration authentic: "The Prophet (peace be upon him), when he prayed, would stand on one leg and raise the other, so Allah Almighty revealed ﴿Taha﴾, meaning: 'Step on the ground, O Muhammad,' ﴿We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed﴾"?

The answer

Historical narrations, included in Al-Shifa by Qadi Iyad, mention that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would stand on one leg and raise the other during his prayers. Subsequently, the noble verse ﴿طه﴾ (We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed) was revealed, meaning, "Step on the earth, O Muhammad."

Despite the weakness and discontinuity of this narration's chain of transmission, its general meaning can be accepted: that the verses were revealed due to the fatigue, hardship, and sleeplessness the Prophet (peace be upon him) endured during night prayers.

As for the meaning of Allah's saying (طه), scholars have differed. Imam Al-Tabari chose its meaning to be "O man," based on it being a word known in the 'Akk language with this meaning, and that this interpretation aligns with the interpretations of the scholars among the Companions and the Tabi'un.

Accordingly, the interpretation of the verse would be: O man, We have not sent down to you the Qur'an that you be distressed, meaning, We have not burdened you with what you cannot bear.

Others hold that (طه) is among the disconnected letters that appear at the beginning of some surahs, and knowledge remains with Allah.
