The answer

The essence of glory (al-izzah) lies in the soul's connection with Allah, its avoidance of places of humiliation, and its liberation from whims and greed, by following what Allah and His Messenger have legislated. Glory is divided into legitimate and illegitimate. Legitimate glory is linked to Allah and His Messenger and elevates a person above ignoble things, while illegitimate glory is blameworthy, such as the pride of disbelievers in their disbelief, or pride in lineage and wealth for the sake of boasting.

The true source of glory is Allah alone, as stated in His noble verse: {Say, "O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent."} [Aal Imran: 26]. Glory is not attained except through obedience to Him, for whoever Allah befriends will not be humiliated.

Glory has multiple meanings, including: severity and harshness towards the disbelievers {humble toward the believers, firm against the disbelievers} [Al-Ma'idah: 54], and dominance, invincibility, and strength, as in His noble verse: {and [that] Allah may help you with a mighty help} [Al-Fath: 3], and as in the supplication of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Allah, strengthen Islam with the more beloved of these two men to You: by Abu Jahl, or by Umar ibn al-Khattab."
