The narration: "Singing causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart" is transmitted as both Marfu' (attributed to the Prophet) and Mawquf (attributed to a Companion). However, its attribution to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is not sound due to the weakness of its chain of narration. The correct attribution is that it is Mawquf upon Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him.
