How authentic is the statement of Ibn Mas'ud to the Companions: "Go back, for it is a humiliation for the follower and a trial for the followed. If you knew me for what I truly am, you would strike me with shoes," and what is the meaning of "خرج" (kharaja) in its context?
Ibn Abi Shaybah and Al-Hakim narrated that whenever Abdullah ibn Mas'ud went out, people would follow him. He would then turn back and say, "If you knew what my door conceals, not two of you would follow me." It was part of the Salaf's guidance to prevent the glorification of men by walking behind them. It was narrated that Umar struck Ubayy ibn Ka'b when he saw people walking behind him and said, "This is a humiliation for the follower and a trial for the one being followed." Ibn Mas'ud's departure was not a matter of isolation or expulsion; rather, he was honored by the caliphs. It seems most likely that people simply enjoyed his company.
