The question

How sound is the tradition (athar): "Ibn 'Umar said to his mawla Nafi', when he saw him praying bareheaded: 'If you were to go out to people, would you go out like this?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then Allah is more deserving of being adorned for'"?

The answer

This narration was mentioned by Ibn Taymiyyah with a specific text and context: "So, adornment is taken for supplicating to Him, Glory be to Him. And for this reason, Ibn Umar said to his servant Nafi', when he saw him praying bareheaded: 'Do you think if you went out to people, you would go out like this?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then Allah is more worthy for whom one should adorn himself.'"

It was narrated from Ibn Umar with a similar context by Al-Tahawi, Abd Al-Razzaq, and Al-Bayhaqi from Nafi' who said: "One day, I fell behind in feeding the camels, and Ibn Umar entered upon me while I was praying in one garment. He said to me: 'Were you not given two garments?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you think if I sent you to some of the people of Medina, would you go in one garment?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Then is Allah more worthy of being adorned for, or are people?'"

The narration does not mention that he said that to him because he prayed bareheaded, but rather because he prayed in one garment.
