Is it possible for a Hadith's chain of narration (sanad) to be sound while its text (matn) is weak, or does the soundness of the sanad necessitate the soundness of the matn? Are there examples of a Hadith being deemed weak based on its text despite its chain of narration being sound?

Scholars of Hadith (definition) terminology have stated that a Hadith scholar's ruling on the authenticity of an isnad (definition) (chain of narration) does not necessarily imply the authenticity of the matn (text). The isnad might be authentic, while the matn is shadhdh (anomalous) or mu'allal (defective).

Ibn al-Salah (definition) explains this by differentiating between the statements "this Hadith has an authentic isnad" and "this Hadith is authentic," due to the possibility of the matn being shadhdh or having a defect.

However, Ibn Hajar refuted this, saying it does not apply to every Hadith scholar. Al-Sakhawi affirmed that the authenticity or goodness of an isnad might be due to its conditions being met, but not so for the matn, due to shudhudh (anomaly) or a defect.

Ibn al-Qayyim stated that the authenticity of an isnad is a condition for the Hadith's authenticity, but not a guarantee of it, as authenticity requires the absence of defects, shudhudh, and nakarah (oddness), and that it does not contradict trustworthy narrators.

An example of this is what Al-Hakim and Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Ibn Abbas regarding the interpretation of the verse, "seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof." Al-Suyuti commented on this narration, saying that Al-Hakim stated, "its isnad is authentic," while Al-Bayhaqi said, "its isnad is authentic, but it is extremely shadhdh." This emphasizes that the authenticity of the isnad does not necessitate the authenticity of the matn due to the possibility of shudhudh or a defect.
