The answer

The in question is found in Sunan Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi, and its wording is: "I am free from any Muslim who resides among the polytheists." Its reason was what occurred during the Khath'am expedition. The ruling is general, for the lesson lies in the generality of the wording, not the specificity of the reason. This Hadith is used to argue against residing in the lands of the disbelievers.
