Multiple narrations, both mursal and with sound chains of transmission, as well as those with weak chains, affirm that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) commanded the growing of the beard and the trimming of the mustache, as a defiance of the Zoroastrians who used to shave their beards and let their mustaches grow long. Some scholars have deemed this hadith (definition) good (hasan (definition)) and considered shaving the beard to be forbidden (haram (definition)), while deeming it obligatory to grow and lengthen it.
