The question

Is the Hadith that states, "If a person disparages another, he will not die until he does the same," authentic, and is warning against disparaging others considered a bad omen (tira)? And is it true that invoking evil upon others will revert back to the one who invoked it?

The answer

A servant's fear of being afflicted with a defect if he reproaches his Muslim brother is not from tiyarah (superstitious belief in omens), just as the fear of being afflicted with evil if he supplicates against his brother is not from tiyarah. A was narrated from Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever reproaches his brother for a sin will not die until he commits it." Its chain of narration is disconnected. Al-San'ani explained that whoever reproaches his brother for a sin will be punished by being deprived of divine assistance until he commits what he reproached his brother for, especially if this is accompanied by self-admiration due to his own safety from what he reproached his brother for. Al-Baghawi mentioned the hadith: "Do not gloat over your brother, for Allah may have mercy on him and afflict you," and that affliction is entrusted to speech.
