The question

Is the story of Malik ibn Dinar and his drinking of wine, the death of his daughter, and his vision of the snake in a dream authentic, or is there no basis for its validity, especially since he was among the righteous and pious from his childhood?

The answer

The story of Malik bin Dinar is well-known, and some scholars have mentioned it for admonition and lesson. This does not necessarily entail a judgment on its authenticity or falsity, because scholars did not scrutinize such stories that are not used to derive a legal ruling, but rather to draw lessons and admonitions. As for his not marrying - if that is true - it does not negate the existence of the story, for perhaps the girl was from a slave woman, and his lack of uprightness in the beginning of his life is not strange, for how many a righteous person was corrupt then repented. The bottom line is that we do not judge the story as authentic or false, and whoever mentioned it only mentioned it for the purpose of drawing lessons from it.
