Is wearing silk reprehensible (makrooh) rather than forbidden (haram)? And does the Prophet's (peace be upon him) wearing of a brocade cloak (qaba’) زر with gold buttons indicate its permissibility, as some infer from the hadith: "It reached me that cloaks (aqbiyah) were brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he was distributing them, so let us go to him..."?

Wearing silk is forbidden for the males of this Ummah by consensus, as indicated by the prophetic Hadiths. It is probable that what was reported to the contrary was before the prohibition, or that the meaning was metaphorical, not literal. The statement that wearing silk is permissible for men is an error, for Ash-Shawkani narrated the consensus on its prohibition.
