What is the authenticity of the prophetic hadith which indicates that an attempted assault by striking is considered an actual assault?

Prophetic hadiths, such as the one stating, "Whoever points a piece of iron at his brother, the angels curse him until he puts it down, even if he is his full brother," and the hadith (definition), "If two Muslims meet with their swords, both the killer and the killed will be in the Fire... because he was keen on killing his companion," indicate that whoever intends a sin and persists in that intention is sinful, even if he does not commit it. Therefore, one who is keen on committing evil deeds and is determined to do them is punished like the perpetrator if only incapacitation prevented him.
